Families looking for a place to spend quality time together in a fun and friendly environment need not look any further than PPL! Family Tea Time is held one Sunday a month in the Apple Fireplace Room from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Family Tea Time started a little under a year ago” said Janis Eberly, Interlibrary Loan Coordinator at PPL. “We are really pleased with how well it has been received by the community. Families come and relax together with a cup of tea and whatever snack we offer. They set up shop, play games together, and just simply unwind and have fun. Random patrons that happen to be in the library will also stop in and join us, which is great because even though the event is named Family Tea Time, it is open to anyone that would like to stop by.”
Each Family Tea Time event is themed. A recent favorite was Star Wars, which was used to coincide with the Universe of Stories Summer Discovery Reading Program. “For Star Wars we made homemade Moonpies and everyone really enjoyed playing a 3-D Star Wars version of Clue.” said Eberly. “It was really fun!”
The August 18th event is Peter Pan themed, where patrons can make and enjoy “Second Star to the Right” sugar cookies. “With Peter Pan being a literary classic, we will have copies of classic books available for patrons to checkout, as well as their movie counterparts.” said Eberly.
“Our goal with Family Tea Time is to give parents a place to bring their kids and enjoy some quality time together.” said Eberly. “It is great in the winter when the fireplace is going and everyone comes to warm up and relax with a hot cup of tea. We have also discovered it is a good way to get out of the heat and come cool off in the summertime, too.”
After August, Family Tea Time will be moved to the first Sunday of each month. However, PPL is closed Sunday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day, so the next Family Tea Time will be held Sunday, October 6th.
“For the October event, the theme will be something all kids seem to love: creepy crawly bugs!” said Eberly. “We are going to feature some of our insect books from the non-fiction section and we will have dirt pudding with gummi worms as our snack. A few families have already expressed their excitement for the October event!”
Bring the family to PPL on August 18th and check out Family Tea Time for yourself, then mark your calendar to visit again on October 6th!
