For this edition of “Worth Watching,” I thought I would offer more recommendations of titles that are available on Hoopla, but are not newly added. While Hoopla adds new titles every month, a lot of what they offer is available for a long time, and with 12,000+ titles to choose from some can be easy to miss!
All titles are also available on DVD at PPL.
A fantastic cast (Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling) lead “The Big Short.” A group of small-time investors bet against the housing market in 2007, months before the infamous collapse of 2008. In doing so, they discover how corrupt the market truly is. Both comedic and serious, this movie was nominated for multiple Oscars, including best director (Adam McKay), best supporting actor (Bale), best picture, and it won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay. “The Big Short” is rated R for language.
When it comes to movies adapted from “Saturday Night Live” sketches there are good ones (“Wayne’s World”, bad ones (“The Ladies Man”) and ones we never talk about (“It’s Pat: The Movie”) 1993’s “Coneheads” is one of the good ones! Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin bring their beloved alien morons to the big-screen in this hilarious movie. Mistakenly left-behind on a routine trip to Earth, aliens Beldar and Prymat realize life on Earth is quite good, and decide to stay and raise a family. But, after being chased by INS, they return to their home planet where Beldar decides to return to Earth in hopes of conquering it! “Coneheads” is rated PG for crude humor.
Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer are magnificent together in writer/director Shane Black’s action comedy “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.” Thanks to a murder, a private eye, a famous actress, and a thief pretending to be a famous actor all end up mish-mashed together while trying to solve the whodunit! “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” is rated R for language, violence, and nudity.
Mel Brooks classic “Star Wars” spoof “Spaceballs” is still hilarious Rick Moranis, John Candy, Bill Pullman and other who’s-who stars of the 80’s lead this classic goofball comedy about a hapless space-pilot and his Mawg (half-man, half-dog) sidekick, trying to save a Princess from being captured by the evil Spaceballs clan. “Spaceballs” is rated PG for language.
Steven Yeun (Glen from “The Walking Dead”) and Samara Weaving star in “Mayhem,” a wild and violent horror-comedy that is a total blast of fun about recently fired employees who suddenly find themselves locked inside the skyscraper owned by the company that just fired them. The reason for the lockdown is due to a highly contagious airborne virus that causes its victims to lash out in anger, along with acting out their worst impulses! Floor-by-floor they battle their way to the top of the building, not only hoping to convince their boss to give them their jobs back, but simply just to survive. “Mayhem” is rated R for violence and language.
